Christoph Both-Asmus (1984, Germany) is currently living and working in Berlin, (Germany), Hamamatsu (Japan) and in the Anaga Nature Reserve on Tenerife (Canary Islands), where he dwells in a cave. He completed his Master of Fine Arts at the Sandberg Instituut - Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam, Netherlands in 2010. The multimedia work of Christoph Both-Asmus is often site specific and focused on performance; therefore his photography, sculptures, installations and videos are frequently performative. Drawing is also a common theme in Both-Asmus’ work.

Authenticity of his materials plays an important role. He creates his works with natural materials such as plants, fire, ice and animals and also uses materials like paper, neon, and glass. However these manufactured materials are often found and recycled through his work. The central statement of Both-Asmus’ work is to show that humans and nature are one, as well as to express his opposition to consumption and the increasingly artificial life connected to this practice.

Both-Asmus wants to raise awareness on the loss of biodiversity and at the same time advocate for alternative ways of living. His art tries to address global ecological problems poetically by showing the beauty of nature and human life. In his numerous lectures and talks, Both-Asmus also takes a stand on these issues as an activist. Interdisciplinary collaboration with other artists has also become an important pillar of Both-Asmus’ work, as he believes in the richness and importance of cultural and creative exchange in times of globalization and as a way of studying.

Funded and sponsored by the “Mondriaan Fonds Amsterdam” in 2011/12/15, Jack Daniels Whiskey, Ortlieb and by “ifa - Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen” in 2016, he has been concentrating on developing his idea of “The Tree Walker”, which comprises several art works and interdisciplinary collaborations with the NGO Operation Canopy, one of the leading botanists in the world, Prof. Francis Hallé, Venice Biennale artist Owanto, documenta artist Bill Kouélany Salomé Lamas and Hervé Youmbi.

Christoph’s work has been presented in exhibitions throughout Germany, Netherlands, Poland, UK, Portugal, Greece, Japan, US, p.e. at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin/DE, Center for Polish Sculpture Oronsko/PL, Leipziger Baumwollspinnerei, Leipzig/DE, Coda Museum Apeldorn/NL. In recent years the artist has joined the performances of his mentor David Medalla.
